PRACTICING PURE RELIGION I once read about an elderly Christian lady who had lived all alone. Partly crippled, she had to rely primarily on the goodwill and help of her neighbors. She spent some of her weary hours keeping a diary, although no one knew why; for she had precious little to record. Finally, the Lord called her to himself to enjoy the blessings of His better Land. It is reported that she lay dead for several days before anyone missed her! In looking through her few belongings, someone discovered her diary. Most of the book contained nothing of interest. In fact, near the end of her life, as one monotonous day followed another, she wrote only three pathetic words of page after page: No one came! NO ONE CAME! James 1:27 states, "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world." A good way to forget your troubles is to help others out of theirs. Romans 15:1-2, "We who are strong ought to put up with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves; let each of us please our neighbor for the good, for building up." Galatians 6:2, "Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ." It is not our responsibility to pass the buck but to step up and volunteer. This is why the Saint Vincent de Paul society is very important and necessary for the mission of the church. This is one society that every serious minded believer, especially the young at heart and those enthusiastic in faith, need to identify with. Charitable giving is one of the noblest acts a person can do. There is joy in giving and only those who give happily understand this. Charity is a grace only of regenerated human nature. It springs only from love to God. Do you truly love God? Will you start investing some of your time and resources on helping those in need? Keep in mind, this is what pure and undefiled religion really is.
