PRE-THANKSGIVING STORM COULD BRING SNOW: Being a native - TopicsExpress

PRE-THANKSGIVING STORM COULD BRING SNOW: Being a native Virginian and growing up very near Richmond, its a bit hard for me to imagine that we might see some snow falling on the eve of Thanksgiving. Thinking back, I cant recall it happening in my lifetime...however, it certainly has snowed before Thanksgiving in the past. I do remember the 4 of snow that fell during the Veterans Day storm of 1987...but November snow in Richmond is not that common. That said, the weather maps look very interesting for a system expected to impact our area beginning Wednesday morning lasting into Wednesday night. Before we get there, well be affected by a system that brings rain, heavy at times by later Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Some thunderstorms are even possible as the storm tracks well west of the area and brings some much warmer air into our region. The rain should be gone before the morning commute Monday with temperatures soaring into the 70s by Monday afternoon. Enjoy, but dont get used to that..... Colder air gradually moves back into the area from Monday night through Wednesday. Another area of low pressure is expected to develop along the Florida/Georgia coast by Tuesday night spreading rain into the area Wednesday morning. As colder air continues to filter in and the storm intensifies off the North Carolina/Virginia coast, that rain may very well change to snow from west to east on Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night. Could there be accumulations based on the current data? Sure. That is a distinct possibility...particularly in areas farther north and west away from Richmond. It COULD even happen in Richmond. That said, many things have to come together for this to happen, and it is early in the season for snow around this part of the state. Both the European Model (ECMWF) and the American Model (GFS) are on board with this scenario right now....but I cant emphasize enough, the timing has to be right or this WILL NOT HAPPEN. Only a slight change in the timing of the cold air and moisture will make a big difference in what ultimately takes place.... With that in mind, we are talking about a system that could have a HIGH IMPACT on travelers for the Thanksgiving holiday. Whether it be rain, snow, or a combination of the two. More updates to come in the days ahead. Stay tuned! Hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend :-) -ROS
