PREPARE THE WAY “A voice cries out, ‘Prepare in the wilderness a road for the Lord! Clear the way in the desert for our God!’” Isa 40:3 GNB War changes many things. It destroys buildings, wipes out towns and cities, wastes vast amounts of money, kills thousands of people - maybe millions - and leaves whole nations broken and dispirited. Recovering from war isn’t easy. In addition to all the usual destruction caused by war the Israelites experienced a threat to their faith. Being far away from their homes and routines, probably having to adjust to different food, having lost family members, they were humiliated as well. Their exile in Babylon was a long, dark night. The Isaiah who sounded the call of God to them was a man of great courage and mighty faith. His task was to be the “bird that feels the dawn and sings while it is still dark”. He had to be in touch with God in the darkness and to sense the people’s pain. Then he had to sound the cry, to point them forward, call them to God and get them to lift up their hearts and their faith. The message is that God is coming to comfort them and to lead them back. Always in the darkness people crave for God to come and rescue them. They cannot make God come. This he does of His own free will and in His own good time. But what they can do is prepare the setting into which He will come, and be ready to welcome Him when He does. The Bible still calls us to be ready for God’s coming. He is always coming! He may seem to tarry long - but He will come. Will you be ready for him when he does? PRAYER THOUGHT Lord, I am ready. Come when you will.
