PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY FOR THE NORTH The clamour for the next - TopicsExpress

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY FOR THE NORTH The clamour for the next president of this country to come from this or that geo-political region, or from this or that religion is not part of my belief or submission. All I am after is to have a president from whichever tribe, religion or segment of the country who can effectively handle the affairs of the country well. Demarcating political offices along sectional, religious and tribal grounds have rub this country from allowing able hands run the affairs of the country. I would like to caution people advocating rotational presidency and other political offices on sectional parameter should get ready to embrace other rotational indices like religion and tribe. Some Northern Nigerian groups, specifically, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) have gone far in their advocacy for the next president to emerge from the north forgetting that, in the north we have two major religions (Islam and Christianity). Worst of all, is the likes of sheik Gumi who chooses to advertise his thought through a political party he shares the same ideology with, not to fill in a Christian as its Northern presidential candidate. We should understand that, when a man goes out there and wrestled out something from his fellow men, on his return home, he shares what he has gotten with his wife. The Northern Nigeria Christians should be the ones complaining about being marginalised in terms number one leadership of this country not a Muslim Northerner. Should Nigerians decide to adopt the rotation bid and slate, the presidential slot to the North, then in the north we have a scourge to settle along religious direction. History is clear on the fact that out the Nine (9) Nigerian leaders that emerges from the north from independence to date; only one (1) is a Christian. The tenth one the north is clamouring for, if allowed to be, should be a Christian just on reason of fair play and goodwill. ‘What is good for the goose is equally good for the gender’ echoed an adage. For the purpose of clarity, below is the list of Nigerian Leaders from the north. 1. Alh, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (1960) Muslim 2. Mr Yakubu Gowon (1966) Christian 3. Gen. Murtala Mohammed (1975) Muslim 4. Alh. Shehu Shagari (1979) Muslim 5. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (1983) Muslim 6. Gen. Ibrahim B. Babagida (1985) Muslim 7. Gen, Sani Abacha (1993) Muslim 8. Adulsalam Abubakar (1998) Muslim 9. Alh. Umaru Yar’Adu’a (2007) Muslim If we share the same North and can confidently say we are all Northerners, then, there is the need to take into cognizance the existence of the minority groups and the religious points on the rotational orbit.
