PRESS RELEASE (April 16, 2014) Moleto A. Smith Jr., USVI Democratic Party Candidate For Governor Announces Hubert Lorenzo Frederick as Lt. Governor Candidate ___ Moleto A. Smith Jr., candidate for Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the upcoming election as a Democrat, is pleased and excited to announce the selection of his Lieutenant Governor candidate. According to Smith Jr., the selection of a running mate is perhaps the single-most important decision that a candidate for Governor makes. It demonstrates the candidates judgment, seriousness about his administrations ability to implement his platform and strategic visions once elected, and his level of respect for the people of the Virgin Islands. For these reasons, it is a decision that I have taken with extreme diligence, deliberation, forethought and prayer. Our selection process is based on a 4-part test for good stewardship., Smith said. Part 1, the person must be a good person, who has demonstrated a deep, abiding and unwavering dedication, commitment and love for the Virgin Islands and all of its people. Part 2, the person must possess and have demonstrated good ethical and moral character. Part 3, the person must be highly competent to successfully perform the statutory duties and responsibilities of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor as required by the Revised Organic Act and Title 3 of the Virgin Islands Code. These duties and responsibilities include direct oversight of the Territorys banking, insurance, real property taxes, cadastral and Recorder of Deeds, Corporations and Trademarks, as well as bring additional value, passion and fresh ideas to the team; and Part 4, the person must be morally fit to represent the people of the Virgin Islands in all settings and at all times., Smith Jr. continues. The individual selected as our Lieutenant Governor candidate meets and overwhelmingly exceeds our selection criteria. Therefore, I am extremely pleased, excited and humbled to publicly announce the selection of Mr. Hubert Lorenzo Frederick, as Lieutenant Governor of the Smith Jr./Frederick Team. Mr. Hubert Lorenzo Frederick is a humble, highly competent, genuinely good person, who has demonstrated good character and moral fitness throughout his life. He is a person whom Ive known personally and professionally for 10 years. He was born, raised and educated on the island of St. Croix, and possesses over 20 years of banking, insurance, financial management and business ownership experience, both nationally and locally - particularly on the island of St. Croix. He is a graduate of the St. Croix Central High School, who attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Florida, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and Finance. In 1995, he earned a Masters of Science degree in Planning and Economic Development from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Frederick, is an expert in business financing, health care administration, commercial banking, real estate, taxes, insurance and management. He has held securities and insurance licenses in the State of Georgia and Virgin Islands and has worked successfully with several of the nations Fortune 500 financial institutions throughout his career. His career growth began as an auditor with Deloitte, Haskins and Sells (a Big 8 accounting firm), and the State Department of Audits, then evolved into loan underwriting, account management, business development and subsequently Managing Director for a large bank where he oversaw the southeastern United States operation. In 2004, he was recruited back home to the Virgin Islands to share his knowledge and expertise as Deputy Commissioner of Health. He later joined a local bank as a Commercial Banker and served in that capacity for six years. During his tenure, Mr. Frederick booked millions of dollars in loans which helped local business owners on the island of St. Croix. He is the owner of his newly constructed Commercial Business Center, in Gallows Bay, St. Croix which houses his three businesses - Island Insurance Agency, a Laundromat and a Dry Cleaner. In addition to his dynamic achievement, he holds credentials as a Certified Financial Service Auditor and a Certified Fraud Examiner. He has continuously been involved in community service and outreach on the island of St. Croix, which include for the past 8 years serving as co-host for the radio program Money Talk and More and volunteering his time as Treasurer of the St. Croix Track Club, a non-profit organization that promotes athletic activities for our youth on the island of St. Croix., Smith states. The people of the Virgin Islands deserve the best representation. The recycling of poor performing political leaders has ill-served the people of the Territory and must stop.
