PRESS RELEASE FOR APPROVAL SIMFED ICS WING ORGANISES A GPU LEVEL GROWERS AWARENESS AND ORENTATION TRAINING PROGRAMME ON SCIENTIFIC METHOD OF ORGANIC CULTIVATION OF LARGE CARDAMOM NORTH SIKKIM. A two day long Awareness and Orientation Programme on Scientific method of Organic Cultivation of Large Cardamom was organized by the ICS Wing of SIMFED in collaboration with Indian Cardamom Research Institute (ICRI), Government of India in Menrongong and Phensong Gram Panchayat Units of North Sikkim on the 30th of August 2014 and 1st of September 2014. The nodal Resource Persons for the programmes were Dr. A.K Vijayan, Dy. Director (Spices), and Dr. B.A Goidade, Scientist of ICRI, Sikkim Region, Government of India. Dr. Vijayan in his intensive deliberation to the assembled growers highlighted the facts that it is a myth that the overall production of Large Cardamom in Sikkim was in decline due to disease and pests. In fact the decline was due to improper management of the plantation. He tabled the fact that states like Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland after importing Large Cardamom seedlings from Sikkim are making their growers visiting Sikkim frequently to learn about improved methods of its cultivation and in the process have to date improved significantly in their state production and area of cultivation. Hel informed that Sikkim is the highest producer of Large Cardamom in the World. This Globally recognized tag needs to be cherished and closely guarded by the Sikkimese growers. In order to do this they needed to improve their management practices in tune with adaptation to the prevailing climatic changes-right from maintaining nurseries, choosing suckers, planting of suckers/seedlings, hygienic maintenance of the plantations, organic method of enrichment of soil and controlling pests and diseases to proper scientific ways of harvesting and post-harvest management. He cited that the basic activity for effective management of the plantation of a grower was for the grower to make it a point to visit his/her plantation every fortnight without fail all year round and take note of all the symptoms and activities happening within, in and around each of his/her crop. Dr. B.A Goidade, in his intense deliberation to the gathering-highlighted the benefits of scientific and efficient crop management. His deliberation consisted of various scientific packages of practices to be followed right from spacing between plants to be maintained to method of application of organic inputs for enriching soil fertility, for control of pests and diseases, recognizing rightly the signs of various diseases and pest attacks and other mechanical control etc. The DGM (ICS) of SIMFED thanked all the attendees for their time and apprised them that they were taking back with them valuable information which they needed to follow and implement in a very committed way. He apprised them that the ICRI wanted the farmers to visit their ICRI farm in Pangthang -the responsibility of the same would be taken by SIMFED. The training was highlighted with an open interaction between the growers and the resource persons, visit to the plantation and an in depth in-field demonstration of the various packages of practices to be under taken. Some organic inputs like Pseudomonas were distributed to the growers. The programme was attended by all respective Ward Panchayats, all beneficiaries of the Large Cardamom suckers/seedlings distributed by the State Government, Horticulture Department, ADO, various line Departmental field personals and all SIMFED ICS field functionaries and officials.
