PRESS RELEASE January 21, 2014 DEATH OF BASRA HASSAN On January 17, 2014, a bomb blast killed Basra Hassan in Kabul Afghanistan. It is very sad that Basra Hassan was working to ameliorate the conditions of refugees – the old, children and women in a war torn country, as a United Nations Humanitarian Worker. It is even more sad that she had dedicated her life’s work to bring solace, comfort and help to suffering masses in the theater of war. It is most sad that Basra was Somali and one of us. It is therefore with a heavy heart thatJubbaland Development Institute JDI issues this Press Release to sympathize with the People of Somalia, the United Nations and the rest of humanitarian world family. Once more the death of our sister, wife and mother is a stark reminder of the ugly realities of terrorism. Every Somali, no matter where they are in the world, are very conversant with the disastrous effects of war, displacement and lawlessness. As one woman who understood this, Basra Hassan sacrificed all her entire life as a humanitarian to bring relief to people all over the world who were going through what all Somalis had experienced or were experiencing. Her death therefore is especially touching to us at JDI. Basra Hassan impersonated all the ideals and goals of JDI. It is therefore with a strong sense of dedication that we at JDI re-commit ourselves to the work that she did and the larger goals of UNICEF and the United Nations that she represented. We, atJDI, are most proud of her because of her work and because she was Somali. That is why at JDI we do not want the sad death of Basra Hassan to be just about mourning. JDI wants to seize this opportunity to celebrate the life of Basra Hassan and the sacrifices of all humanitarian workers like her. In the same vein JDI not only pledges on behalf of Basra Hassan to continue themarvelous humanitarian work for all of Somalia but maintaining more than ever the vision of bringing democracy, development and self realization to Jubbaland and to a united and prosperous Somalia where there is justice and equality for all-man, women and child.
