PRESS RELEASE MONDAY, 28TH JULY, 2014 MASANSA POLICE BOOKS UNRULY PUPIL On Thursday, 24th July, 2014, male boarders witnessed some form of comedy that quickly turned into a tragedy when one of the grade 12s attempted to stab the Vice Head boy, Peter Malama, with a homemade machete. A Press Club crew that rushed to the scene found a boy identified as Humphrey Kashweka of 12B and from Kafue hostel armed with a sharp machete wriggling and wrestling, endeavouring to escape some hands that had held him so as to advance on Peter who also looked charged on the other side as he rummaged for a chance to tussle with his antagonist. Only the robust hands of some boys prevented bloodshed. This prompted the School Head boy, Austin Phiri to call Mr. Bunda, Mr. Mukete and the Deputy Head teacher Mr. Mudenda. However, Humprey could not recognize the presence of the members of staff as he continued cursing and threatening to kill Peter. When dragged to the staffroom for interrogations, the boy said he was determined to kill Peter and thereafter commit suicide. This caused apprehension in members of staff who decided to take the boy to Masansa police post. In an interview with the Press, Mr. Mudenda said the school had taken Humprey to police in trying to protect him from committing suicide and prevent him from killing his friend. The Deputy Head teacher then advised all pupils to refrain from beer drinking. According to Mr. Mudenda, Humprey was acting in a druken stupor and that the situation had made him to miss exams that were on Friday and perharps even those that are yet to come. The whereabouts of Humprey were not yet known by press time. REVERSAL ON MOCK IS A SYDROMME – GRADE 12 A grade 12 pupil of Mkushi Coppermine Secondary School has described the decision by provincial education office to rescind the suspension of mock examinations as a grave syndrome of anarchy. The pupil who later defined anarchy as ‘the lack of organization and control’ said this was the best term to describe the situation. The learner questioned why such a change was abruptly made and speedily reversed as though it never had any effect on people’s lives. He wondered why the province just dared to go about such an idea when mock examinations were a national wide exercise. He told the Press that despite being happy with the reversal of the decision, he together with many of his friends was already dispirited by the earlier pronouncement. The boy noted that being successful in examinations calls for preparedness and preparation is a process that cannot happen in a single day. And Mulenga Mwelele of 12D has also said this year’s mock examinations have been poorly organized and that the school should expect anything in terms of results. According to Mulenga, many pupils had not expected that mock exams would be cancelled and hardly had they been convinced when the idea was rescinded. The boy said this will have a bearing on the results. This year’s mock examinations for Central Province were postponed to next term but the idea was reversed last week and Mkushi Coppermine Secondary School has since commenced writing. PUPIL NITPIKS ASSEMBLIES Former Entertainment Prefect, Consilia Bwembya, of 12D has observed that the routine of holding assemblies on Mondays is robbing the pupils of two periods every week. The girl said assemblies of late have been starting late and taking too long, thereby robbing pupils of about two precious periods equivalent to 80 valuable minutes of learning time. The girl then said if the number of minutes is spread to all the learning weeks in a term, it would be realized that about 800 minutes of learning time is spent on assemblies. She then appealed to the school administration to consider having assemblies after two weeks or the afternoons like other schools do. Every Monday, Mkushi Coppermine Secondary School holds assemblies to evaluate the previous week and strategize on the new one.
