PRESS RELEASE Public school teachers train to reduce child labor in sugarcane areas By: Elsa S. Subong ILOILO CITY, July 12 (PIA) – In the province of Iloilo, some district supervisors, principals, and school heads are set to join a series of trainings and consultation workshops which are aimed to help them reduce child labor in sugar cane areas. Iloilo is among the 11 provinces chosen by the Department of Education and the ABK3 LEAP project of World Vision Development Foundation, to be among the sites of the trainings. Dorothy May Albiento, ABK3 LEAP Advocacy and Communications Officer said the Iloilo training will kick off on July 23-25 at the Sarabia Manor Hotel. Albiento said that after ABK1 and 2 Initiatives against the worst form of child labor, World Vision is back with ABK3 LEAP. “This time we focus on reducing child labor in sugarcane areas, expanding our intervention to Livelihoods, Education, Advocacy and Protection,” Albiento said. She said that they want to make the teachers gain a deeper understanding on how education plays an important role in reducing and preventing child labor in sugarcane areas. Added to this, Albiento said, is their recognition of the role of teachers to achieve the Education for All agenda, to bring children back to school, keep working children in school and help them complete school. The 2011 National Statistics Office census estimated that 62 percent of children working in hazardous situation are in in the agriculture sector, where sugar farms are included. Albiento said that the three independent but interrelated training episodes in the Teacher Training Series are expected to inspire teachers to appreciate their role in reducing child labor in sugarcane areas. Episode 1 orients participants on hazardous child labor in sugarcane areas; Episode 2 seeks to enhance creative teaching methodologies and enable them to develop learing manuals; and, Episode 3 is roll-out activity where the teachers will teach other teachers in their community. World Vision partners with the ChildFund Philippines, Educational Research and Development Assistance Foundation, Inc., sugar Industry foundation, Inc. Community Eco finance ventures, Inc. and the UP Social Action and Research fo Development Foundation, in implementing the project.
