PRESS RELEASE: THE INAUGURAL NATIONAL HBCU PRE-LAW SUMMIT LAUNCHES AT NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY THIS FALLMarketing FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE INAUGURAL NATIONAL HBCU PRE-LAW SUMMIT LAUNCHES AT NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY THIS FALL DURHAM, N.C. -- The Inaugural National HBCU Pre-Law Summit is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 19, 2014 at North Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham, North Carolina, one of only six historically Black law schools in the nation. This venue for the event is special in that there are several HBCUs located in North Carolina within driving distance to the host campus including Bennett College for Women, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, North Carolina A&T State University, Saint Augustines College, Shaw University, and Winston-Salem State University. This groundbreaking event was created especially for HBCU undergraduate students and graduates. The summit is the one and only event of its kind in the entire country focused on addressing the unique issues and concerns facing HBCU students and graduates interested in going to law school and becoming lawyers. Students and graduates from all HBCUs across the country are invited to converge in Durham to take part in an intensive and power-packed day designed to expose them to game-changing information, resources, and connections. The launch event will feature prominent keynote speakers, panels, and a mock law school class. Confirmed keynote speakers include Attorney Ricky Anderson, Managing Partner at Anderson & Smith, P.C., a well-known entertainment attorney who represents several A-list celebrities including Steve Harvey, Mo’Nique, Ricky Smiley, Mary Mary, and Yolanda Adams, and Dr. Joseph Youngblood, J.D., a higher education administrator and scholar, who serves as the Vice Provost and Dean of the John S. Watson School of Public Service at Thomas Edison State College. Both are proud graduates of HBCUs. Attorney Anderson is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University and Texas Southern Universitys Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and Dr. Youngblood is a graduate of Florida A&M University. Featured panel topics include law school admission, law school preparation and the law school experience, as well as the legal job search and legal and non-traditional career paths. These panel discussions will be of particular interest to HBCU students because knowledgeable law school administrators, law students and lawyers will directly address issues of concern to them which are commonly ignored in general sessions on these subject matters. Additionally, a seasoned law professor will conduct a mock law school class so that participants can experience first-hand what it is like to take a traditional law class utilizing the Socratic method of classroom discussion. Registrants will be provided with a legal case to read and brief prior to the session in order to properly prepare. In addition, a law school expo will take place where students will have the opportunity to meet with law school representatives from across the country to find out about their law programs and get answers to their questions. This specific event will take place at North Carolina Central University’s Walker Complex. A complimentary continental breakfast, lunch and snack break will be provided to all pre-registrants. After the formal summit activities, an official launch reception will take place where attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy food and drinks as they participate in both structured and informal networking activities designed to help them connect with other aspiring law students, current law students, and lawyers. The Saturday after the summit is an optional day of leisure and learning where participants will have the opportunity to further connect with others. Planned activities will include exploring the Black heritage of Durham, North Carolina including its historic Black Wall Street, eating at one of the many Black-owned restaurant establishments, and discovering the neighboring city of Raleigh as well. Admission to the summit and law expo is completely free of charge, open to the public, and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Saturday activities will be at the participants own expense. All aspiring lawyers interested in attending are requested to register online prior to the event. Pre-registration is encouraged in order to ensure a seat in the auditorium and a reserved box lunch.
