PRESS RELEASE: Visitors will be able to enjoy live music from local bands on a floating stage at Leeds Dock on Sunday, compered by Kiki deVille from BBC One’s The Voice. ‘Water-Way’ To Travel To Festival A free water taxi service will be in operation this weekend (June 28 and 29) to help ferry people to and from Leeds Dock for the 7th annual Leeds Waterfront Festival. The 12-seater vessel, sourced from the waterways of Amsterdam, will operate along the River Aire, between Granary Wharf and Leeds Dock. The boat will take 15 minutes to cover the route, with sailings every 30 minutes from 10am through to 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The free service is being operated and paid for by the owners of Leeds Dock, Allied London, who have recently embarked on a major project to transform the area into a vibrant, must-visit destination which is home to creative and innovative industries and a thriving social scene. As well as helping visitors to get to and from the site this weekend, Allied London has just completed the installation of approximately 60 metres of stepped astro-turf banking next to the waterfront area at Leeds Dock, which will provide seating for hundreds of spectators during outdoor events - starting with this weekend’s festival. Further work is planned over the coming weeks to create new public gardens along the main approach to the waterfront, offering a mixture of relaxation and play. At the same time, improvements are also being made to the pedestrian route linking the site to the rest of the city. Lucy Whalley, project co-ordinator for Allied London, said: “With thousands of visitors expected to descend on Leeds Dock this weekend for the festival, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to get here. “As a waterfront destination, it makes perfect sense to offer people the option of getting here by boat and we’re confident it’ll prove a huge hit with festival goers of all ages. “Moving forward, we’re looking at operating water taxis to and from Leeds Dock on a regular basis to give people another way to reach us and take advantage of the array of exciting events and spectacles planned at the site over the coming months.” Now in its seventh year, the Waterfront Festival will offer two days of live music, a vintage market, street food and drink stalls and a host of activities for all the family including a fairground, bouncy castle, circus acts, craft workshops and a bird of prey exhibition. The highlight of the weekend is the Dragon Boat Race at Leeds Dock on Saturday 28 June at 11am which will see local businesses pitting their rowing and fancy dress skills against one another in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
