PRESS RELEASE Yesterday, while investigating illegal drug activity, Florala police officers found meth labs at a Montgomery Street residence. Kevin Lynn Byrd, 32, and Kara Nicole Chase, 39, both of Florala, were arrested for Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, Manufacturing a Controlled Substance I, Felony Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and two (2) counts of Distribution of a Controlled Substance. Upon their arrival, officers immediately saw two active one-pot methamphetamine cooks, and they called agents with the Drug Task Force and the Florala Fire Department for assistance. After entering the residence, Drug Task Force agents quickly defused the active cooks and then obtained a search warrant. During the search of the residence, they recovered more than half a gallon of meth oil; four spent, or already completed, meth cooks; smoking devices; and other chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine. Drug Task Force Commander Mark Odom said, This was one of the biggest ‘one-pot’ labs I have seen in Covington County. The ‘one-pot’ method is attractive to meth cooks because it is both quick and easy. It is also highly volatile. Byrd and Chase had two active cooks going at the same time. If one of them had exploded, it would have set the other off as well, and the entire neighborhood could have gone up in flames. Drug crimes are not victimless crimes, and they can and usually do hurt innocent bystanders. Luckily today, we arrested these two before someone else was hurt. Commander Odom thanked the Florala Police Department, Covington County Sheriff’s Office and Florala Fire Department for their work in the investigation.
