PRIVATIZATION--- There was a time in India when socialistic pattern of society ruled the roost, and ownership, production and distribution of goods and services were sought to be nationalized. FCI, LIC, RTC etc were all in that mode. Now, the world is moving towards globalization and privatization. De-nationalization and disinvestment are the present mantras. In the process, perennially poverty-stricken (.:D) Government is becoming cash-rich. But, the tragic victims of this policy are (1) Public health and (2) Education. The Government hospitals in India , unlike their counter-parts in the West, are notoriously starved of funds, equipment, qualified staff and basic facilities and amenties. Same is true of schools and Universities. Merit is important only for admissions---what with so many Entrance Tests. But, merit is not a priority in the selection of teaching staff. Meritorious students taught by mostly average and performance-poor teachers--with a few honourable exceptions. The teaching staff is selected and gets promoted on considerations other than merit---in Open as well as Reserved categories. Just because a person is selected in open category does not mean the best among them is selected. The same is true of reserved categories. The best do not get selected. Where are we going? India, that is Bharath?
