PROF WOLE SOYINKA: DEAR SIR, PLEASE HOLD THE GRAMMAR: IT IS A CHANGE WE WANT ? BY SANI AHMED SAMBO GUSAU With all due respect Prof Sir, please permit me with all my poor grammar to comment on your article entitled The crimes of Buhari i chose to call it a comment because it is by no means a rejoinder to you. Far from that! In fact, even if im not a student of English you in deed owe me an unconditional respect because i would still have read more about you and your superb record in the world of literature which I struggle to learn. Who am i therefore to join issues with you sir? That will be just like a rat or rather an ant challenging an elephant to the boxing ring or like an attempt to catch a tiger by the tale. Im however very disturbed by your well articulated attempt to dent the growing popularity of GENERAL MUHAMMADU BUHARI whose record of integrity has become the only hope of Nigerians of the present and future generation at a time when his excellent leadership qualities are being magnified across the four walls of Nigeria and beyond. It is sad, that your well respected voice is now used to swim against the traffic of new clamor for change. Haba! prof your article is not only ill-timed but quite disparaging! If you had raised all these issues you raised in this unpopular article long ago we could have understood that it is your usual GUN VS PEN battle with Military leaders Which forced you out of the country during the Dark-goggled-No-Nonsense GENERAL SANI ABACHA. and thus we could have hailed you for being a champion of democracy but now! aa! we smell a rat! akwai lauje cikin nadi Honestly sir, im very suspicious of two things surrounding this your article challenging the integrity of GENERAL MUHAMMADU BUHARI and still doubt if it is in deed written by you 1. The density of vocabulary, idiomatic expression and other rhetorical devices which characterize your unique jaw-breaking style of writing have been a bit scaled and watered down in this pessimistic article. One may therefore be prompted to ask: could it be someone else impersonating you? Or you are the one simplifying the English because this time around because you have special audience the Nigerian masses that you want to brain wash and becloud there sense of reasoning which is in high spirit and enthusiasm predicated by a need for change in recent time? 2. The second puzzle i have about this article is: where and when do you have all the time these days to raise such issues and even put them almost in uncountable paragraphs just few days to election even though you had far better and ample time in the previous elections which were apparently won by GMB but rigged in favor ...? prof sir, I still insist: we smell a rat! The most difficult task is for one to find himself in the mandatory situation to tell his teacher. sir you are wrong IM not trying to claim the credit that I have taught by this exceptional literary icon. NO! who am i? But i have been taught like Mikail Barau, Asiru Maradun Mansur Isah BuhariAminu ShittuAmina AuduMuhammad Sajo through your books LION AND JEWEL and many others(KALUBALEN KU! pen for pen). So i may tell when you write for LITERARY purpose and JONATHARY purpose just like the one you wrote this time around. This makes us to think that the recent satirical display and war of words between you and that woman who shed crocodile tears and screamed that Diaris GODoooooooo! was only one of the fictitious! Display of your skillful literary works of arts! Finally i have just one advice for you sir: In the wake of this agitated atmosphere and wind of change i beg you to guide and guard the reputation you have attained over the years and keep mute and reserved! We are in a critical period in which our solutions does not hinge on gargantuan vocabulary or literary fictions alone but a more pragmatic approach under a disciplined and incorruptible leadership hopefully OF GENERAL MUHAMMADU BUHARI. RESERVE YOUR GRAMMAR PROF, NIGERIANS NEED A CHANGE! and like your master in the field of literature WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE once said: THE DIE IS CAST! THE VICTORY OF THE NIGERIAN MASSES HAS BEEN DETERMINED AND CANNOT BE CHANGED! PLS ACCEPT MY KIND REGARDS PROF. YOURS SINCERELY, SANI AHMED SAMBO
