PROGRESSIVE WRITERS GROUP Empowering the Writer! Dear screenwriters! Greetings! Please read this post fully. It concerns the future of Indian screenwriting. And, by implication, yours too. (Others read too, to know what is going on in this field.) The Progressive Writers Group (PWG) has been steering the Film Writers Association (FWA) since 2008, with one consistent goal: Empower the writer! In these years, FWA has become proactive, lobbied together with Javed Akhtar for amending the Copyright Act in favour of writers, fought cases against producers to get justice for our members, strengthened the Dispute Settlement Committee to protect exploited writers, begun negotiations with producers and broadcasters for a standard contract that would protect writers’ rights, created a website where writers can register their work online, conducted numerous workshops, seminars and conferences that helped writers, formed a National Solidarity Front for Screenwriters, and made FWA prominent on international screenwriting platforms. However, all this work has to be carried forward. Our Manifesto (2014-14) 1. Conclude negotiations for the Minimum Basic Contract for film & TV writers and lyricists. This includes i. Minimum fees for budget-wise slabs, ii. Credit guarantee, iii. No arbitrary termination, iv. Royalty payment via Copyright Society 2. Defend the amended Copyright Act in court against broadcasters and producers who have challenged it 3. Support the formation of a Copyright Society to ensure royalties are collected and distributed to writers, nationally and internationally 4. Strengthen the National Solidarity Front for Screenwriters, which FWA initiated a few months ago 5. Include greater participation of regional language screenwriters (Marathi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati) 6. Increase the presence of Indian screenwriters on international platforms 7. Continue to hold screenwriting workshops for new Hindi, Marathi, Bhojpuri and Gujarati screenwriters If you believe that these should be done, then come and vote for the Progressive Writers Group at the FWA Elections on August 17, at Celebration Club, Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri West. (Voting from 1-6 PM). ALTERNATIVELY, IF YOU IGNORE THIS AND DONT COME TO VOTE, AND SOME OTHER GROUP GETS INTO THE EC AND DERAILS THESE OBJECTIVES, THE RESPONSIBILITY WILL ALSO BE YOURS! Sorry to sound like this, but it is a time to choose! Surely you can come for half an hour, once in two years, to secure the future of your union. (We have Electronic Voting Machines this time! Yes!!) And yes, PLEASE SHARE VERY WIDELY!
