PROJECT 80 - A few kind words from Steve Hughes! Thank you to everyone who has been involved in PROJECT 80. You have restored our faith in human nature and made a massive difference to how I can spend the time I have left. When our 80 series was stolen we were devastated. Not only for the loss of the vehicle and all of our personal possessions but for all the time and effort that had gone into finding the right car and getting it set up so we could get to all those places I wanted to see before I go. For a minute it looked like one rotten little maggot had ruined everything for us. Then all of you amazing people came out to help and support us. The great Australian traditions of mateship, lending a hand and a fair go are alive in all of you. We will never be able to thank you enough for the things you have given us and the kind and encouraging words we have received from all of you. You took my entire family from tears of grief to tears of joy. When I was diagnosed I had a long look at what was really important to me. It was soon apparent that above money and assets, above social status and fame there is the quality of your own life. How true you have been to your own dreams. How well you have lived your life, not just for yourself but for your family and the others that you meet. My great love has always been for this amazing country we live in and the landscapes and wildlife it contains. I have been lucky enough to work with many traditional Indigenous people from the Flinders Ranges to Arnhem Land and beyond and they have freely shared their enormous wealth of knowledge of country with me. I have seen places and things few if any other whitefellas have seen and for this I am eternally grateful. I am lucky in that I have always found employment that kept me in the field, be it front line mineral exploration, eco-tourism or training in remote regions and consequently I have seen most of the truly wild places in Oz and my “bucket list” is really quite small and achievable. Wasted time cannot be recovered so my advice to all of you is to get amongst it! Go and see those places you dream of. While you can. Life may be shorter than you think. So thank you again for helping me to get the maximum out of my remaining time. Your generosity in deed and spirit is overwhelming. And we will be sure to pass it on to the others we meet on the track. THANK YOU. YOU ARE ALL BLOODY LEGENDS! Steve Hughes
