PROUD FATHER MOMENT #(after whatever the last one was): Today was Gabrielle’s first day interning at the Lynn Police Department, learning first hand on what she wants as a career – forensics. The detective in charge gave her a brief detail of what he does in forensic identification, showed her the different offices (including the cells) then brought her around to meet the team. If anyone knows Gaby, you know she is somewhat shy on the first meeting. She thinks she’s that way because she hasn’t gotten used to the person or group. What she’s doing (and not realizing she’s doing it) is psychoanalyzing the person or group. Once she ‘understands’ them, all bets are off and the Kraken is released. From her animated and giggle-punctuated retelling, the group of detectives she met was told that Gaby did not enter her name through a school, as has been past practice with interns; she did so directly and on her own accord. From that point, the dicks were so impressed, they gagged with her and invited her to participate in fingerprinting, and view an actual crime scene. She was warned that the site could be gruesome. The detective gave her a few possibilities; like body parts. She said she knew that, expected it and was hoping for it. She fought an attack of the giddies when she was told that she would learn blood spatter. Blood spatter has become my daughter’s specialty. Almost every time that one of the crime shows we watch shows a crime scene, she will follow along and blurt out the voids, the directionality and other points associated with the forensic science. Of course, she obsesses during sci-fi movies where they get it wrong (“DAD!” she would snarl, walking over to the paused TV screen. “See where the alien’s tail goes through the man’s chest? Look at the way the blood is going up. It should be going down based on the angle the tail went through his back. The spatter will be all wrong!”). Depending on the body count, it sometimes takes three hours to watch a 90 minute movie. Because of her interest and their enthusiasm at her interest, they are eager for her to come back next week. Unless a scheduling change occurs, she will be playing CSI: Gaby Saturday and Sunday morning. This all comes after she told me that her progress report shows no grades less than a B. And that she did exceptionally well on her MCAS. The fact that this culminates on Ma’s birthday makes this special. It’s proof that she’s still here. She’s still watching over us. And probably for cheap amusement. I am so proud of that kid. She beautiful. She’s intuitive and empathic by nature. She’s self-aware. She’s strong willed. She’s intelligent. She’s brutally direct and sarcastic and loves the nuances and power of the word. The best part is, she knows it. Which makes her deadly in so many ways . . . I love it. Gabrielle Gibbs: Crime Scene Investigator. Has a nice ring to it.
