PSL explains Final venue selection We received a detailed explanation from the PSL regarding the selection process for the MTN8 Final between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. Amid ample speculation over the stadium that will host the much-anticipated Soweto Derby finale, PSL general manager Derek Blanckensee reveals that the process entails a number of factors that have to be taken into account before the decision to name a venue is made. “There are two process which run simultaneously in the running to the venue selection,” says Blanckensee. “Firstly, the PSL approach the national stadiums and request financial bids to host the match, and the second process requires the two teams contesting the final to submit their top three venue preferences. As Blanckensee explains , the financial bids from the national stadiums include the cost of rental to use the venue, as well as the following: - The stadiums requested percentage of gate-takings - The cost of security - Hospitality allocation - The cost of travel for the participating teams The stadium with the most financially feasible bid will then enter the discussion to be held by the PSL Organising Committee, and will be compared to the two clubs’ preferred venues. “With regards to the two clubs selecting their preferred venues, what needs to be taken into account is obviously that a cup final must be played at a neutral venue, therefore both teams need to give consent if one of the options include the home venue of one of the participating teams,” adds Blanckensee. Blanckensee also explains that the reason for the current delay in the announcement is that all the stadiums have not submitted their bids yet. “We are still awaiting bids from some of the stadiums. Once we’ve received those, with the cut-off day being on Thursday, the PSL Organising Committee will meet and we will then make a final decision and announce the venue thereafter.” This website has been informed that all the World Cup stadia, with the exception of the rugby venues (Ellis Park and Loftus) were approached by the PSL and are expected to have submitted their bids by Thursday this week. The stadium options therefore include FNB Stadium, Cape Town Stadium, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Peter Mokaba Stadium, Mbombela Stadium, Free State Stadium and Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
