PUBLISHED BY WAYNE HEALTHCARE DIABETES EDUCATION DIABETES NEWSFLASH Spring, 2014 Diabetes Day Type 2 Diabetes is a disease in which your pancreas does not make any or enough insulin, or your body prevents the insulin you produce from working correctly. Insulin is necessary for your body to use glucose, from the food you eat, for energy. High levels of glucose caused by uncontrolled blood sugar can damage your eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves, legs, and feet. Taking steps to control your blood sugar level can help you to live a healthy life with diabetes. However, these steps can sometimes seem overwhelming. Break your steps down into Self Care Behavioral Goals which include: Healthy Eating, Being Active, Monitoring, Taking Medication, Problem Solving, Healthy Coping, and Reducing Risk. Diabetes Day is a wonderful opportunity to learn about some of these behavioral goals. Diabetes Day will be offered at Wayne HealthCare on Thursday, April 3, 2014. The program will take place from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Speakers will discuss topics of interest to individuals with diabetes. Along with speakers, there will be educational information to help you with your daily diabetes care. Alison Huet, pharmacist, from Kaup Pharmacy, will be presenting a program on “Diabetes Medication”. PLAN AHEAD FOR SICK DAYS Illness can make is harder to manage your diabetes. However, planning can keep things under control. Illness creates stress in the body as you fight off the infection. This can increase your blood sugar even if you are not eating very much. It is important to test your blood sugar at least four times a day when you are sick. If possible try to eat your usual amount of carbohydrates. If you do not have an appetite you can substitute liquids for the same carbohydrate value as the food. If you are unable to eat due to an upset stomach, try 8oz of sugar free, caffeine free drinks every hour. If drinking causing vomiting, try sucking on ice pops or ice chips. Every third hour sip non-diet drinks. Take your usual dose of diabetes medication unless instructed otherwise. Talk with your physician if you have questions about your medications when sick. Call your doctor if…. • Your blood glucose is higher than 250 mg/dl for more than two readings. • Your blood glucose readings are constantly low. • You have persistent nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. • You are at all unsure of what to do.
