PUBLISHED POEMS PHOENIX REBIRTH Swirling and swirling in harmattan winds, Blown across desolate sand dunes Of the vast Sahara; The anguished past of a people, Deprived, depraved and degraded By skills and wiles of a pale race; Wafts like smoke in the dying embers Of hope long lost in dejected despondency. Land plundered, wealth and art Carted across the Atlantic, In vast galleons of western empires; To enrich a people who with Christianity And faith deceived and defiled, Plundered and pilfered Desecrated and destroyed The cradle of civilization. And what is left of Africa? Stories of poverty, penury and pain? Of disease, disuse and debase? Of HIV and Ebola and Malaria? Of hope mired in unbridled corruption? Perhaps there’s light arising, For down in the rainbow nation of Africa South; Embers of hope ignite like a phoenix rebirth! Ever since the vow to you I made And bachelorhood farewell I bade; I have not brought you much joy Though you have given me girls both and a boy.
