PULPIT ETHICS (For Guest Speakers) By Coach Ray 1. Know your Audience – As you prepare your message, imagine the Type of Audience that you are about to deliver the message to. Plan your delivery according to the perceived need of your Audience. 2. Dress properly – Ensure that you are wearing what is “Acceptable” for that particular Group or Congregation. Do not over-dress, neither under-dress. Look smart. 3. Connect with the Sound Tech In-charge, Multi-Media operator, Worship Team Leader and the Master of Ceremony for the day before the Service starts. This is one of the main reasons why you should never come late. • Know which microphone to use. • Ensure that your USB for P.Presentation is handed over to right person. • Inform the Worship Team Leader how you intend to end the Service. • Follow the MC’s lead. Remember: You are a Guest Speaker, not the boss. 4. Sit up-front with the Senior Pastor or Officer of the Day as the Service begins. Don’t make them look for you somewhere else. As you sit, keep your eyes focused on what is happening on the stage. Ensure that all your Toilet needs have been done prior to the Service. 5. Do not apologize for your presence. As you are introduced, move briskly towards the Stage and let the people feel that you are excited to be with them on that day. Never say that you have not prepared enough for this Message. Honor the Senior Pastor and Elders of the Church by Thanking them in public for inviting you to speak. 6. Avoid long preludes and Introductions. Go to the Message at once. People came to hear the Word of God, not your funny stories. Follow this rule: Stand up, Speak up, then Shut up. 7. GIVE YOUR OFFERING: Be a good example for the Congregation to follow. 8. PREACH WELL : a. Keep Eye Contact with the Audience. It is better to miss a point from your outline, than miss the audience entirely. Whatever you do, keep your eyes on them. b. Maintain a good “easy-to-follow” outline. They are not interested in your Theological expertise, they simply want to understand God’s Message; so avoid high sounding and complicated words and phrases. c. Do not contradict any major Teaching or position of the Pastor. d. Speak clearly and audibly for everyone to hear. e. Avoid any form of mannerism, and avoid using your pet word. f. Do not use the pulpit to attack anyone or address a political issue. g. KEEP TO TIME – Never go beyond your Time Limit. Do not assume that people still want to hear some more from you. The shorter you preach the better the chance for you to be invited again. *Observe the Timer and follow it, but Never mention it to the audience. 9. After the Service Be available to fellowship with people. Do not leave at once. Have a mint ready to keep your breath fresh.
