PURPOSEFUL DESIGN- Ps.139:14. The news broadcasted on the 4th of July 2012 regarding the “God particle” or Higgs Boson is fresh in many of our minds. As you know, it is related to the study concerning the origin of the Universe, especially on tracing the way in which the fundamental particles acquired mass and turned out to be matter. Scientist Peter Higgs, in 1964, came up with a theory for the role of particle ‘Boson’ in this process and therefore the name Higgs Boson. Interestingly, scientist, Sathyendra Nath Bose of Calcutta had first proposed this in 1924. Because of the difficulty in isolating and identifying Higgs Boson, Leon Liddermann made a comment that it is a “god-damn” particle. But in his book, it appeared as “god particle” a typo error, perhaps. Although the particle Higgs Boson is popularly known by the name “god particle”, the term is not derived in the sense of God being in it. However, we cannot write God off the picture. Many scientists are compelled to think of a cause behind the belief that the universe began some 14 billion years ago with an explosion of cosmic dimension called the “big bang”. Using the equations of general relativity, scientists tried to trace the ‘explosion’ backward, to its origin to an instant when the entire physical universe burst forth from a single point of no size called ‘singularity’. Studies are being conducted on the ejected particles acquiring mass and resulting in the present universe and the role of Higgs Bosons in this process. An experiment was done using the Large Hedron Collider, a tunnel made 100 meters below the ground at the border of Switzerland and France. The procedure that the ‘European Organization for Nuclear Research’ adopted to identify Higgs Boson is termed, ‘proton collision’. This means, the scientists actually conducted a ‘micro version’ experiment of the big bang under controlled conditions. From its inception, the universe had to be fine-tuned to an incomprehensible precision for the existence of life. The fine-tuning of the universe points powerfully towards an intelligent Designer. General relativity also points to the need for a cause that transcends the domains of time, space, matter and energy. Some scientists opinonated that as long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a creator. The scientifically revealed creator uniquely and decisively matches the character and the characteristics of the biblically revealed God. The development of the universe seems to be aimed at providing an environment suitable for human life. The unrelated constants of physics, the forces of nature and physical laws conspire in a mathematically incredible way to make life in the universe possible. There is no fundamental reason why these values have to be the way they are. It is silly to think it could have been an accident or chance. Remember, chance has no power to cause anything. Chance is only a mathematical abstraction. Since it is nothing, it cannot do anything. Moreover, intelligent life has the ability to think and act in a purposeful way. The whole realm of nature shouts about the design of the Universe. Design always implies a purpose. Not only the universe, but all in it including each one of us are in the plan and purpose of God. We are wonderfully made to accomplish His purpose. Moreover, we are designed to experience higher things in life that are beyond the temporal. In this space-time existence, God meets the demands of our minds and quenches the thirst of our hearts so that we can love God with all our hearts and minds. Neither us nor our children find difficulties and tragedies unbearable because it pleased God to make us sure of a purposeful life. We only want His full will and purpose to be accomplished. We read in Jeremiah 29:11, “for I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. Dr. George Samuel.
