PVC Relief Project / Open letter to HSUS -----Original Message----- From: Tcourt5096 To: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], stop_horse_cruelty@yahoogroups, Sent: Sun, Jul 7, 2013 4:02 am Subject: Wayne urgent from Monika, PVC Relief Project Dear Wayne, dear HSUS, In a collective call for improved standards at holding facilities to meet minimum common sense welfare standards for former wild horses, I ask if you would please join us. As you may have seen, due to recent extreme temperatures in NV, the Gimme Shelter campaign was formed and has caught attention. BLM answered by mounting a sprinkler at PVC in NV. That is a start. My goal is to improve the lives of those corralled horses, starting with Palomino Valley Holding Facility. I think you and I could agree that the current dire circumstances are nothing short from cruel and scandalous in a state where those in charge sit in air-conditioned offices while the very horses they warehouse with no option for stimulation nor enrichment dwell along, suffering in enclosed pens with no form of relief from any elements. With no federal guidelines pertaining to shelter/care/welfare for horses in holding, this must be fixed. The latest BLM excuse that shade is no part of their "open range" life is dubious at best, when public outcry mounts and inquiries on shade are made. I think we need to keep in mind here that neither chutes, high fences, panels and the human-caused loss of their band members are part of that "open range" picture as is painted. Horses adapt, that is a fact that is non-disputable and applicable if so chosen. It all boils down to priorities (Expressed in my letter to BLM of 6/14/13). It is not difficult nor impossible to erect highly installed shade structures as are in some facilities. Misters are another option(portable systems available, letter/proposal of mine to Joan Guilfoyle BLM Board of 7/3/13) The installed sprinkler of last week by PVC Manager James Beck is encouraging, yet we must push for more reform, as your organization issued in a press release last December, thus calling on BLM to be more humane. Alleviating boredom, implementing shelter/relief from elements and improving holding is one major element in this call. The cruelty is not just in the brutal round ups. It is in the desolate pens, in which these once majestic animals are forgotten and warehoused like numb objects. The recognition of a complete non-existence of any shelter for thousands of horses (PVC) begs the same quest for deliverance of reform, and leaves a sour aftertaste knowing BLM is spending millions on round ups (continuing), but nothing on much needed shelter. America must do better. I ask that you please join this call. It has reached good publicity and your help will increase the chance for a better reality for these trapped equines. A united call to maintain the pressure in this emergency situation is more important than ever. The media is picking up. Today a piece is published in the RGJ, noting BLM for its first step in the right direction, allowing some horses to cool off with a sprinkler. Your joining this call will garner more attention to this urgent plea. I prefer to keep a dialog with BLM and hope you will join this call to achieve this goal. We celebrate independence, freedom and unity - in a country that was built on this concept yet demonstrates harsh contradiction of such principles - for horses in holding may suffer : possibly from lack of care, disease, heat exhaustion, sunburn, profuse sweating, metabolic system malfunction, possibly circulatory collapses, and ultimately death. The presence of moldy hay does not enhance this picture, posing more serious threats to their well being. We know that fatalities at PVC are high. The preventative measures required to counteract this dire situation are to implement an enhanced infrastructure as an integral part to the mission of our call. I ask, that HSUS - being one major forefront in all equine affairs - please contribute in this urgent collective call, suggesting to BLM to install shelter/relief options as soon as possible. Thank for your time. Kind regards, Monika Courtney
