Paid Field Assistant Internship--$100-$150 a day. Please read full description & details before applying. Field Assistant Needed for Studying Winter Annual Plants Tucson, Arizona Mid-November to Late January -- I am seeking a paid assistant to support my field work in this upcoming winter-spring field season. The project exams the invasibility of invasive Sahara mustard and its impact on native winter annual plants in the western Sonoran Desert. The empirical work is conducted under a rigorous theoretical framework that predicts how environmental variation influences competitive coexistence between species. The field site is located 200 miles west of Tucson, Arizona. Basic tasks involve identifying, manipulating and possibly measuring desert annual plants. The work requires low impact camping in the desert for 4-6 days during each field visit and approximately 10 hours of daily work under harsh desert conditions (wind, sand, +70 F day temperature to 30 F night temperature). The reward is 1) being in close touch with a diverse community of plants that give splendid spring blooms, 2) sleeping under a starry sky with little light pollution, 3) routinely running into Kangaroo rats and kit foxes at night time, and 4) learning how to conduct a rigorous test on species coexistence across multiple spatial scales and to connect theory with conservation. The assistant will expect approximately 24 working days from mid November to late January and about 8 working days from late March to mid April 2014. The actual starting day of the field season depends on the timing of the first major winter storm and therefore is highly unpredictable. The end days of the field season on the other hand will not go beyond mid April. Being able to cover both the Nov-Jan and Mar-Apr periods is ideal. However, it is ok if the person can only cover the Nov-Jan working period. Pay rate is $100-150 per day depending on the persons skill. Candidate should have the basic skill of identifying plants or other taxa groups and a genuine interest in botany. Candidate should also have the outdoor skills required for low impact camping. If interested, please contact Max Li at [email protected] with a resume and a brief statement of interest.
