Pain as businessman evicts Kisenyi traders By FARAHANI MUKISA Accusation. The traders accuse Mr John Bosco Muwonge of breaking a promise on an extension period, an allegation he denies Kampala. Hundreds of traders in downtown Kisenyi will have to find another workplace after businessman John Bosco Muwonge yesterday forcibly evicted them from his land to construct a shopping arcade. The traders alleged that while Mr Muwonge had given them one-and-half years to relocate to another work place, they were surprised to find their property sealed off with iron sheets yesterday morning. “We have only moved six months into the agreed period. I wonder why Muwonge has turned around to evict us without any notice,” said Ms Robinah Najjemba, a trader. Most of the evicted traders deal in cereals and blacksmithing. The eviction, which reportedly started early in the morning, was executed by muscular men. Though traders tried to stage a demonstration, the heavily deployed police managed to calm them. Last month, a group of veterans sued Mr Muwonge with some eight people for allegedly plotting to evict them from the 1.8 acre piece of land, which they allege President Museveni offered to them. High Court Judge Lydia Mugambe had earlier stopped Mr Muwonge from evicting the traders. However, Mr Muwonge’s spokesperson, Mr Bashir Ssali said the case was disposed of in the businessman’s favour and accused traders of not being cooperative. “We never had any formal agreement with traders. But, we agreed to give them a grace period as they amicably find where to relocate,” Mr Ssali yesterday said. “But surprisingly, almost every month we have been receiving court summons from different groups of traders to answer queries of failure to compensate them, until we sought for a court order to evict them as it is today [yesterday],” Mr Ssali said.
