Pain in the rain, but seconds are looking safe! The rain was a pain at Kensham Park as the 2nd XI eventually banked 11 points from an abandoned game with Ipplepen on a day that saw the players on and off the cricket square at regular intervals and the new covers put to use throughout! After winning the toss with the rain clouds gathering skipper Rob Acton opted to field and a belated start saw the teams begin a 32-over affair. The opening overs from Lucas Fencl – playing his final game for the cub before returning to his native Prague – at the tennis court end and Andy Nichols at the roller end the first three overs produced 16 dot balls, a single and a wicket ball! The first break came ten overs in and a lengthy sit-and-watch-the-rain session ended with the game reduced to one of 25 overs. The reduced format saw the visitors have to try and bag as many runs as they could, but they came up against some excellent bowling in what were difficult conditions for all bowlers with a wet ball. Fencl signed off with the best figures, his six over spell yielded him three wickets for 20 runs and there was also a three-wicket haul for Luke Wrightson (3-22 in five overs). Phil Chappell picked up 2-15 from five overs and there was a wicket each for Andy Nichols, the grand master sending down five exceptional overs to return impressive figures of 1-8 and Will Birley who claimed the final wicket in the last over of the innings with a smart caught and bowled to complete the job of having Ipplepen bowled out for 87 in 24.5 overs. Birley’s two overs saw him finish with 1-10. The only wicket-less one of the six bowlers deployed was skipper Rob Acton, the conditions did not help him and he finished with 0-11 in two. The reply was played out in rain (as had been much of the Ipplepen innings), but Andy Nichols and Bryn Jones gave the side a lightning quick start to reach 18-0 in four overs. However, after Jones had been struck three times skipper Rob Acton called off the run chase on the grounds of safety. Nichols finished not out 14 and Jones was four not out when a premature stumps was called.
