Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. This has to be my favourite Buddhist saying and one that I try to remember to apply as often as possible. It is currently at the forefront of my mind as I have just been stung on my ankle by a wasp! As my concentration on other things ebbs and flows the pain increases and decreases. When I am feeling sorry for myself the throbbing becomes really noticeable. When I am focussed on writing this post I dont even feel it. The same is true of emotional challenges. We have to deal with all sorts of setbacks in our lives, way more significant than a wasp sting. But the same principle applies. Shit happens. The more of a fuss we make the harder life is. If we take challenges in our stride and dont see them as personal attacks, we deal with them effectively. If we feel got at and downtrodden, our ability to respond is severely limited. Not always easy to remember and apply this principle - but worth trying!
