Painful Emotions: The Clinical Treatment of Anger and Shame. Online workshop: September 16 - October 13, 2013 Ron Potter-Efron is a mental health and chemical dependency therapist who specializes in the treatment of difficult emotions. He is the author of fourteen books, including Angry all The Time; Letting Go of Shame; Letting Go of Anger; Rage; and the Handbook of Anger Management. He has facilitated professional seminars throughout the world and is known for his practical focus, good sense of humor, and thorough treatment of his topics. Anger and shame represent two emotions that are difficult to treat behaviorally and clinically. Problematic anger presents a challenge because it appears in multiple forms and results from many causes. Meanwhile, shame is the most hidden emotion, difficult to examine or intervene upon even in therapeutic settings. Both anger and shame can develop into chronic conditions so that an individual’s emotional life becomes impoverished and dominated by that particular feeling. The purpose of this seminar is to provide practical and effective approaches to deal with anger and shame from behavioral, cognitive, affective and existential perspectives. Many case studies will be shared that demonstrate the value of these approaches. Additionally, two models for more detailed work with clients will be offered: an “anger styles” model that helps counselors treat eleven varieties of anger and “the four spheres of self” model that addresses increasingly deeper levels of the shame experience.
