Palau President Discusses Recent Violent Crimes With Leaders KOROR, Palau (Island Times/PIR, August 1, 2013) — In response to recent incidences of violent crimes in Palau, President Remengesau called an emergency meeting with elected and traditional leaders on Wednesday. Present during the meeting were representatives from the OEK, Council of Chiefs, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education and Ministry of State. The president proposed the creation of a public forum in which real solutions to the problem of increasing crime can be presented and discussed by select community leaders as well as the general public. The result of the meeting was the initiation of a public forum to provide real solutions to the growing crime problem. The Public Forum on Communities Against Crime and Violence will be held on August 8 at the Ngarachamayong Cultural Center. The forum will be in line with Declaration No. 12-002 by the Rebukel Belau on September 12, 2012, declaring "the increasing number of violent crimes a national crisis." The Council of Chiefs issued Declaration No. 12-002 to call upon all parents, leaders, law enforcement personnel and the general public to join forces in addressing the root causes of the rise in violent crimes in the community. The forum will be open to the public. Seating will begin at 7:30 am and the forum will last until 12:00. After the forum, a working group consisting of representatives from The Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and the OEK, as well as representatives from the Council of Chiefs, Governors Association, Church Groups and Youth Groups will convene to formulate an action plan to be signed by the President and the OEK. In a statement to the press, President Remengesau said "This trend is both troubling and unacceptable. I believe that as elected and appointed leaders of our nation, we must come together to address this issue that has infected our small community. We cannot stand by and hope that these problems will take care of themselves; we must take action. The purpose of this symposium will be to hear from the elected and appointed leaders of our community and to identify real solutions to the alarming incidences of crime within our communities."
