Pallanguzhi, Navakankari, Pachisi, Chauka Bara, Chaupar. Do these ring a bell? These are names of ancient Indian board games that charmed common folk, Kings and Gods alike! It was at a game of Pachisi that Duryodhana deceived the Pandava’s, eventually setting up the epic war of Mahabharata. Mughal emperor Akbar too was a great fan of Chaupar, and he had a courtyard designed as a Chaupar board in Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, with beautiful women from the harem for pawns. Its this same Pachisi and Chaupar that have inspired the modern day Ludo! Ever thought of going through your moms old wooden chest? You might just find an antique Pachisi in ageing silk!
