Pankaj Sir and I decided on a little afternoon birding to basai today. We reached the place at around 12-12:30pm and were hoping for a good birding day. There were not many types of birds around but the Common Chiffchaffs were in a baffling number. They were everywhere and gave us a good glimpse. The other birds seen today are as follows- Common Chiffchaff Blythes reed warbler Paddyfield warbler Moustached warbler Plain Prinia Graceful Prinia Ashy Prinia Bluethroat Red Avadavat Ruddy-Breasted Crake Indian Silverbill Citrine Wagtail Yellow Wagtail White Wagtail White-Tailed Lapwing Red-Wattled Lapwing Black-Winged Stilt Purple Heron Ruddy Shelduck Purple Moorhen Common Moorhen White-Breasted Waterhen Wood Sandpiper Green Sandpiper Common Redshank Isabelline Shrike Asian Pied Starling Purple Heron Marsh Harrier Black Drongo Black Kite Common Crow Cattle Egret Little Cormorant An Interesting documentation on the feeding habit of the White-Throated Kingfisher - I was sitting on the ground looking at the reeds in front for warblers and prinias that were fluttering everywhere and all of a sudden a White-Throated Kingfisher just swooped down just inches away from me and caught hold of a Plain Prinia from the Hyacinth growing there. My heart skipped a beat as i saw the kingfisher take away the shouting-prinia and to my surprise it sat just about 8-10 feet away from where I was sitting (May be it was losing grip and so it decided to sit at the time and grab its snack properly - LUCKY ME !!) Looking at the prinia struggle for its life as the kingfisher held it by one of its legs, I literally had goosebumps. I did feel bad for the prinia but it mustered enough courage to fight the king and freed itself eventually leaving the kingfisher lunch-less and then i felt bad for the king.
