Paolo Freire gave me the ground to stand on when I started teaching in 1988. His is an ideology of enormous value and a practice that can still change the world. As Freire describes it, an effective educational mode cannot rely solely on the banking concept. (Where information is deposited in the heads of students -- which they are asked to withdraw at exam time). Instead, a pedagogy of witness, truth, action, and fearlessness is called for: Latin America was ripe for Freire when his work began. More than ever, the US needs a pedagogy like Freires model. From it, students develop a habit for critical thought: history, context, analysis, repeat.
