Parable 3 ----------- Perfect Circle _________ The pupil was brilliant. He wanted to know the fundamental meaning of all concepts. One day he asked his teacher, ‘Sir, what is perfection?’ The teacher knew the concept but he was at a loss to find a definition. He thought that it can be defined only by an example. At first he wanted to say that God is an example of perfection. Then he remembered that the universe, His creation, is so imperfect that He may be greater than everything in human knowledge but he cannot be an example of perfection. Suddenly he remembered geometry. There is an example of perfection in geometry. He drew a circle and told his pupil that it was an example of perfection. The pupil pondered over it and was satisfied that this was so. On his own he also thought of a perfect triangle—the triangle with all sides of equal length as well as all corners of equal degree. But an experience made him abandon the idea of a perfect triangle. His house, the house of his friend and the house of the girl whose charm attracted him were so situated that by a quirk of geometry the distances formed a perfect triangle. Both friends fell in love with the girl together and the triangular relationship became so complicated that he sacrificed his love in favour of his friend and abandoned the idea of a perfect triangle. But the perfection of the Circle always enamoured him and he whole-heatedly believed in the perfection of a circle. After a brilliant academic career he chose the profession of a town planner. He made the best use of geometry for planning ideal townships. A perfectionist as he was, he was obsessed with the idea of the perfect circle and he used it to good effect in planning beautiful cities. For a road crossing, it was always a roundabout of perfect circle. How smooth was the movement of traffic in a roundabout of perfect circle! Nothing can be better planned than this. Then it happened. At a perfect roundabout, an absent-minded driver lost the control of his steering, it smashed another car, the other car hit another, then another. In no time the perfect roundabout looked like the junkyard of smashed cars.
