Parang fills the air this weekend Published: Friday, December 12, 2014 Parang is alive and well this weekend as live shows are scheduled nationwide. The fun actually begins this evening when Los Dinamicos, featuring the talented Allard siblings, performs at Fiesta Plaza, MovieTowne, Invaders Bay, Port-of-Spain, from 8.30 pm. Tomorrow, Studio 66 is having its Parang Jam Session at 6 pm. The session will feature Los Angeles de San Miguel and other artistes and will be held at Studio 66, located at 66 Sixth Street, Barataria. Also on tomorrow, from 8 pm, is the second instalment of this year’s Parang & Steel, hosted by PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars at panyard, at 56 Tragarete Road, Newtown. Holding the spotlight will be La Divina Pastora, Myron B, DJ Kern Crosby and host band Silver Stars. Back at MovieTowne tomorrow, the Christmas entertainment continues with Natalia Dopwell, again at 8.30 pm. You can expect more parang music on Sunday evening when birdsong holds Christmas in the Park, in Auzonville Park, Tunapuna, at 6 pm. Billing for this event includes birdsong Academy Orchestra and birdsong musical outfits, plus Richie Quarles Orchestra, Los Parranderos, John Thomas & Eastern Youth Chorale and more. One of the country’s most popular and biggest parang events to be staged annually takes place on Monday evening at the La Fillette Grounds in Paramin. It is The Original Paramin Parang Festival from 7 pm and it will feature Los Alumnos de San Juan, featuring parang queen Alicia Jagessar, Lara Brothers, Mucho Tempo, Baron, Kenny J, Ronoman and much more. The promoters have insisted that no coolers will be permitted. Non-parang Christmas fare includes the ongoing A Magic Christmas Voyage at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s, headlined by The Lydian Singers. Showtime is 7.30 pm today and tomorrow, and 7 pm on Sunday. The Christmas Suite and the launch of Bravura, an upcoming vocal ensemble, feat Tahirah Osborne, Alan Cooper and Darren Shillingford, is also being held tomorrow evening, at 7.30 pm, at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain. Come Sunday, at 5.30 pm, Tidings of Comfort and Joy annual Christmas production will be held at the Auditorium of Bishop Anstey High School East/Trinity College East, College Avenue, Trincity. The Euangelion Singers and Band, T&T Youth Philharmonic (TTYP) and St Augustine Chamber Orchestra (SACO) are the star acts. more info Although it’s not an actual Christmas event, one of the country’s oldest and biggest charitable ventures—Guardian Neediest Cases Fund—will host the fund-raising premiere of Annie, at MovieTowne, at 6.45 pm. The movie stars Jamie Foxx, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale and Cameron Diaz. Twelve-year-old child actor Quvenzhané Wallis plays Annie, a young, happy foster child who is also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014.
