Parent: Hey! How was your interview? I called you 4 - TopicsExpress

Parent: Hey! How was your interview? I called you 4 times! Off-spring: Ya, it was fine. I landed a 1.5 Cr package. Parent: Wow! Why so sad? Off-spring: I told this first to my friends thinking they would be happy for me. Parent: And? Off-spring: Know what? Of 1000+ students, I was the only one who got through. My extra curricular activities, internships, projects, all of this helped me. They came with a 5 Lac package but ended up offering me a 1.5 Cr deal! Parent: thats good! Off-spring: Is it? As per my best friend, 1.5 Cr should have been used better to hire 10 others Parent: So the world hasnt changed a bit, has it? Chal, Im happy for you. Go ahead, call your relatives and get their blessings. And, er, dont mention the salary to them. Are you able to relate with the above dialogue? Keep that in mind. In our modern Indian society where we are sending rockets to Mars, people write articles and claim the use of such an expedition at a time when there are infants dying in India and more than half Indians are below poverty line. They should, at this point, be reminded of the Phailin Episode. In 1990s, a powerful cyclone struck the eastern coast of India (as usual) and killed many hundred thousands. In 2013, a more powerful cyclone called Phailin struck the same coast, and killed 2 people. See the difference? Reduction in mortality was possible due to the IRS and IMD doing their jobs. From the time of Julius Ceaser, man has been advised to not grow too big to be killed. You do know why Julius was killed, right? His fellow friends assumed that he may usurp the kingdom and become an autocrat. They killed him on an assumption. Why am I bringing such examples in front of you? I should be talking about the media culture right? Wait for a few seconds. People are taught to not be pompous because other people might feel jealous. So, youre saying that women shouldnt wear short clothes because it invites mens eyes? Perspective, they say. I say, be proud of your accomplishments. How little they may seem, how big they may look, be proud. We humans have been gifted the power of ego, pride, and empathy. Whats the harm in using them? From time immemorial, ego and selfishness has been classified as a vice. Altruism is seen as a supreme virtue. Try breathing for an other mans sake. You cant, because every cell of your body lives for itself, not for others. Yet, celebrations are looked through the eye of jealousy, and not appreciation. Media is not funded by philanthropists. It is a for- profit company. Giving the correct news is as important as selling editions. Here comes an article that a boy from BITS got a 1.5 Cr package, and hells loose already. Media should not focus on such feats. There are larger issues Ans: Media is also meant to inspire. If by this news, a kid is inspired, then what harm is there? Media should not appreciate such news because the kid is going to work for a foreign company Ans: So, even Mother Teresa should not be appreciated by the people of Norway, right? The kids salary couldve been used to hire 10 others Ans: That is the prerogative of the company and the company didnt solicit any advice from you. Plus, talent is meant to be rewarded. One cricketer can get a per match payment of >1 Cr, and a kid cant get 1.5 Cr annual salary right? The arguments can be many. I touched upon many issues, to only make the reader understand that the question is not only about media, or government criticism, or something else. The underlying crab-mentality, hypocrisy, envy, insecurity, and the need to negate popular opinion drives people to do such things. But, they forget to do so with logic and rationale. P.S. Are you reading closely? Ive said much without typing than otherwise. P.P.S. Not being content with your achievements and striving to work harder, and being envious of others achievements because they did better are two very different things.
