Parent Tip of the Day - October 24, 2013 ‘What’ and ‘How’ Questions Keep Children Talking Did you have a good day in school? you ask your child as she walks in the door. Yes, she answers, and says no more. Sound familiar? Sometimes, parents feel as though a conversation with their child is like a game of 20 Questions. But there is a way to ask the kinds of questions that will encourage your child to tell you more. Instead of asking questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no, try asking what and how questions. For example, instead of Did you have a good day in school? you might ask, How was your day? Instead of Do you have homework? you can try, Can you explain to me what you are supposed to do tonight? Another technique to get kids talking is to ask them to tell you about something: Tell me about your day at school, Tell me what you and Lisa did while working on your social studies project. It’s good to get in the habit of asking these open-ended questions now, because as kids reach the teenage years, even the most talkative are likely to clam up. Getting into the habit of regular conversation, and learning the techniques that will get your child talking, are good skills to learn now. brought to you by American Dream Academy, Arizona State University Copyright 2013 The Parent Institute, a Division of NIS Inc.
