Parenting in Times of Turmoil As part of their course work, undergraduate students in the community psychology program developed an awareness video on how to support parents to promote resilience in their children during times of community violence and recognise if their child had been affected. They created a script for the short film that was closest to the reality described by parents in a needs assessment survey conducted in Cairo. As for the suggestions on building resilience illustrated in the film, they interviewed NGOs and mental health professionals that deal with parents in different communities to understand what are the culturally sensitive ways in which they can encourage Egyptian parents to build resilience in their children. They also backed their information with an extensive literature review of previous journal articles and books written related to parenting and child resilience in areas of socio-political turbulence, as well as guides written for the use of professionals and parents on how to talk with children. To accompany the film, they developed a guidebook for NGO’s and mental health professionals to support them in offering services to parents and families regarding child resilience and parenting. The guidebook is created in both English and Arabic to increase accessibility to the public. The information in the guidebook synthesized results from a survey of parents, interviews and literature review, and includes the following: The challenges that parents face when surrounded by violence Kinds of violent events experienced by children and how it affects them Signs that a child may be affected by exposure to violence The effects on the capabilities of parents in terms of parenting Answers to questions that are frequently asked by parents Ways to promote child resilience Suggestions for conducting awareness programs based on parents’ preferred modes of receiving information How to use the short film as part of a guided discussion The film and guidebook were disseminated and presented in a conference that was attended by representatives from non governmental organizations and government offices focused on women and children. USB flash drives were given to the representatives with the guides and films so that they would be able to use it. Following the conference, the project has successfully achieved media coverage on popular talk shows, magazines and newspapers.
