Parents Most of us are ignorant about the position that parents hold within Islam and therefore attach little importance to pleasing their parents. Allaah says in the Qur’an: “…No mother should be harmed through her child, and no father through his child…” [2: 233] And He says: “And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.” [17: 23] He also says: “And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.” [31:14] The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked by Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) which deed is the most liked by Allaah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ”Prayer offered on time.” Then he asked him: ”Then what?” and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ”Kindness and respect towards parents.” [Al- Bukhaari and Muslim] Therefore be not neglectful of your parents, treat them well and thank Allaah that He has comforted your sight with the presence of your parents. And make eagerly use of the opportunity now that your parents are alive, for it is as Al-Harith Al-’Ukli said when he was asked why he was crying during his mother’s funeral, ”Why should I not cry when a door to Paradise has been closed for me?” And Shaykh Shinqitee beautifully said: Being good and dutiful to parents is an obligation and hence the Muslims should being with this before the voluntary good deeds. Don’t get fed up, Don’t get bored, Don’t get tired! For indeed you are (in their companionship) immersed in the Mercy of Allah the Majestic! Every moment you are by their side causing them joy, dissipating their grief by your compassion and even by their mere looking at you! How many parents hearts are in grief – thirsty (for companionship), but all this fades away with the presence of the sons and daughters. So therefore be wary of the weakness of your parents and their mercy and love them. The worldly life is worthless, but being good and dutiful to your parents is only a matter of hours and moments. And it may be that Allah the Glorious and Majestic chooses your parents (causes them to die) so that you bite on your fingers in regret when regret is of no avail! So fear Allah with regards to your parents and be thankful to Allah that He has comforted your eyes with the presence of your parents. From this night let not a person sleep except that he thinks how he can serve his parents.
