But the country is also home to breathtaking natural beauty, much of it protected in 10 French national parks. Mercantour National Park, tucked away in southeastern France, is a particularly special place to visit. The park highlights the beauty of the Maritime Alps, allowing travelers to experience the picturesque landscapes, quaint mountain communities, and diverse wildlife found in the region. Marked footpaths thread their way through valleys and over mountain passes. The 600km of trails allow hikers of any ambition to head out and explore. Incredible scenes like the dramatic descent of the Gordolasque River to the valley below, the glassy calm of Lake Allos, or a sighting of the antelope-like Chamois reward explorers. While the Valley of Marvels offers a window back thousands of years through time. Carved into the stone outcrops are Bronze Age rock engravings showing scenes of animals, tools, and individuals. For those not interested in hiking, many examples of this ancient art can also be seen in the commune of Tende near the Italian border, now easily reached by train from Nice.
