We are already back on track and started the year talking to #StellaVander. Born in Paris 1950, Stella Vander started her versatile career at the age of 12 as Stella. Together with her uncle Maurice Chorenslup, only four years older, she recorded a huge number of singles/EP-singles between 1963 and 1968. Many of them ridiculed and parodied the French version of Beat-music called Yé-Yé, that Stella considered epigonic and unoriginal. Songs like Beatniks dOccassion or Cauchemar autoprotestateur portrait the zeitgeist in Frances 60s in an extraordinary way. After having met her future husband #ChristianVander in 1970, she joined progressive-rock-band #Magma (facebook/pages/MAGMA/123777837633298), first as their manager and later on as one of their vocalists. Magma went on to become one of the most influential progrock-bands ever due to their unique mixture of Coltrane-influenced jazz, rock and choral arrangement reminiscent of classical composer Carl Orff. To express his vision in depth, Christian Vander went so far as to create an own language for Magmas music. Kobaïan included elements of Slavic-Germanic languages as well as parts of the scat-yodelling vocal style. This adventurous music was dubbed Zeuhl, which is the Kobaïan word for celestial, and their records, especially their opus magnum Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh, led to a devoted followship of other bands like Zao, Art Zoyd and a lot of Japanese Zeuhl-punk bands. In an in-depth interview, Stella Vander told us all about her early career as Stella, about Frances music from the 50s until today, about Magmas development and her third career going solo from the 90s on. She also spoke about founding and leading Magmas very own record-label Seventh Record and explained why the contemporary Parisian music has problems staying creative.
