Part 1: My first encounter with the Californian Paramedics 8:45 am…dyed my hair. Went in the kitchen to make a cup of coffee…a male housemate was around, likewise, fixing himself a drink. 9:05 am, noticed housemate was holding his chest and unusually no talkies….in a very low pitched voice…he said…”I am not feeling well…my chest is so tight and I am having chest pains.” Housemate is a 6 footer male and weighing 232 lbs. Nnnaaaahh…I did not worry at all…help is just a phone call away…it’s right here on my fingertips! Then…he announced…”I am starting to get dizzy now.” Ok…ok…no more negotiations. Dialed 911….. Just a ring and I was already talking to the operator…giving me a one at a time instruction of what to do until the Paramedics arrived. I was calm…but…. ….heck, at the back of my head…I was swearing…I was angry and screaming…”why now that I am alone…why not yesterday or the other day…why!!!!????,” why now that I just dyed my hair…why you did not even wait till I washed my hair…why!!!???,” “why you did not wait till I had my shower…why!!!???....and many more whys. This is not funny at all! I was wishing that I was just having a dream…that it is not real…not happening at all. Reality struck…he might fall on me!!!! The operator guided me all along…she made sure that I am ok until she hangs up the phone. Barely 5 minutes…the Paramedics arrived…the ambulance…the fire truck….men in uniforms…(I think dark blue…not sure but dark t shirts…oh I don’t know it did not register at all)…carrying “unusually” big bags…”unusual” stretcher, “unusual” machines…”unusual” life saving devices. But wait! What the heck am I seeing!!!!…. (Hmmm…when was this happened?... 29th of July….3 days since…I can’t get over it!). The door was wide opened, as per instruction, the men rushed in, went straight to my housemate’s bedroom. There was a lot of movements…a lot of talking…a lot of unusual sounds….and I was just standing right where they saw me when they first walked in…I was just stuck in the same place until one of them called my attention…to ask few questions. No…I was not nervous…my heart was beating normally…I was so calm that as if I am not dealing with a life and death situation. True enough…heart attack…es like a thief in the middle of the night! But wait….this is not about heart attack….this is all about my first encounter with the Paramedics. Could be different from the one you saw on television or on youtube…. Part 2…to follow!
