(Part 2) Am I lucky or what? Back to part 1, I got an offer for a scholarship for my master in the US by the Murkett family if I could pass a TOEFL and GMAT exam. I got just enough scores to get into Auburn university at Montgomery business school. Luckily, I could transferred five basic courses from Yonok college. I ended up having to take just 11 courses for my master degree. The Murketts welcomed me to their family as if I were one of their own. I had a chance to learn and experience American culture by visiting museums, libraries, theaters and social functions. I am sure that I learnt to be positive from them. I can say that I wont be here today without their help. Back to school I remember that I took two courses in my first semester, Statistics and Accounting. My English was just enough to carry a conversation but not for an MBA. So, I picked the calculations courses. Well, I timed myself while reading and it took me an hour to go thru five pages in a textbook. There are 1,000 pages in a textbook. Two courses meant two text books. It would take me 400 hours of reading. Basically, I have to read about five hours a day. That was exactly what I did. I got two Bs. Have you heard of a comprehensive exam? Before graduating, you need to take a test which combined with questions from every class. The only way to get around that was to graduate with 3.5 GPA. If you know me, I do not like to have to work more that I really have to. I worked harder. I registered three courses in my second semester and I got three As. I cam tell you proudly that I deserved them. How did I do that? - I tape recorded every class. - I listened to those records after class. - I never missed a class. - I spent more time on textbooks but learnt to read faster. - I talked to the Murketts of what I learnt. Well, the first three months was not easy because of the language barrier, food, culture and I missed home. What did I learn being in the US? 1. You can achieve anything if you try hard enough. (within reasonable) 2. You can learn anything if you read or do some research By the end of the 16 months in the States, I got my master degree in Finance with 3.73 GPA. Was it luck?
