Part 7 : I rode north away from Grayling on the ORV trail and after afew hours I came to a small lake . I decided to stop because it was remote and looked like a good place to filter water for my canteen . As I pulled my filter from my pack I noticed a small lake side cottage on the opposite shore . I had to check it out so I pushed my bike off the trail and into the heavy cover so it wouldnt be seen . I made my way to the cabin and once there I found it abandoned . I went back and got my bike and decided to have a look around . The cabin was run down and only about 500 square feet with no running water or electricity . This was a typical hunting or fishing cabin that hadnt seen anyone in afew years . As I searched the cottage for anything I could use I noticed a small bottle of dish soap in a cupboard . The dish soap and the lake made for a cold bath but it was way over due . The few canned goods I found had expired atleast 3 years prior and I wasnt willing to risk getting sick . The outhouse still had a roll of toilet paper in it and I couldnt leave that behind . The bedroom had a old iron frame bed and a mattress stuffed with goose feathers but it was wonderful and after I had finished the peanut butter and crackers from my MRE I was fast asleep , The next morning I felt like a new man I was clean , fed , and well rested . As I looked at my maps I struggled with leaving this place . The cottage was remote and isolated surrounded by thousands of acres of timber . It was on a lake that would give me water for drinking and fish to eat . As I rode away and left it behind I couldnt help but think to myself "had I of known about this place before things fell apart I would of stocked it with food , ammo , fuel , and fishing equipment ." I rode the trail for miles and ended up just east of Indian River when I had to stop because of a flock of wild turkeys . These birds numbered atleast 20 and refused to move from the trail . As I revved the engine and yelled to the birds to move it dawned on me that this was food . As a city boy I have never hunted but I needed the food . I knew it was a gamble shooting one of these birds because anyone in the area would hear the shot but its not like my bike is quiet . I used my 9mm thinking it would be quieter then the magnum and shot the smallest hen in the group . The rest of the birds took off in a flash once the shot rang out and much to my suprise I learned turkeys can fly .
