Part of a captains job in the Age of Sail was to keep a sharp eye on the barometer. Strong winds can not only tear sails but rip the highest masts right off the ship, so it was imperative when a storm was brewing to strike the topgallant masts and royals down onto the deck. Because ships logs contain details of weather conditions around the clock, along with the date and ships location, theyre an invaluable source of information about weather in the past. Theres a project that is crowdsourcing transcription of old handwritten logs onto the computer. I DID warn you. oldweather.org/
