"Part of my thinks that NYC could play a role as a global city of revolution... in the way that Paris did in the 1800s. We could list for hours the reasons why that is possible.... (and then list the obstacles to all that.) But really, the "tale of two cities" - the development of Manhattan into a gated, global, glitter bauble of capitalism, and the gathering of millions from around the world to work frantically while they press their noses against that glass window of privilege.... It is a place where millions are only vaguely connected to the political framework of the rest of the U.S., where the hopes of mobility and the shocks of class ossification clash fiercely. It is a city that attracts energetic impatient intelligent scrambling people from all over the world -- who often land raw and intolerant of illusory politenesses." -Mike Ely
