Part of the problem, of course, is that there was no accuser other than the state - no-one whose job it was to defend the Steenkamps, or give them a voice. The only evidence given and witnesses called were those deemed appropriate by them. So, its last minute nod to Reevas family - calling her cousin to speak - felt like something of an afterthought. This has ruined our whole family. It has ruined Uncle Barry and Aunty June. Reeva was everything to them. They adored her, Martin told the court. Barry and June Steenkamp - finally seeing a glimmer of the daughter they knew, represented in court - broke down repeatedly. Every new memory brought fresh tears. They caressed each other throughout. It was sweet and incredibly hard to watch. RIP Reeva Steenkamp. We hope the Justice system evolves so it doesnt repeat again and again this erasure of the victim and keep their name a presence in the courtroom. The second circle of VOH needs more than this.
