Participants Artist Biography Qayyum Chowdhury One of the foremost painters in Bangladesh, Qayyum Chowdhury (b. 1932, Feni) is known for the intrinsic beauty of a language developed on folk motifs. His paintings are based on a particular Bengali idiom that conveys a sense of the clayey earth and the green-red-blue of the alluvial plains. Qayyum graduated from the Government Art Institute, Dhaka, in 1954. He has figured prominently in all the progressive cultural movements in the country. Notable among numerous awards that he received throughout his career are the First Prize in Painting, National Art Exhibition, Lahore (1961), the Imperial Court Prize, 5th Tehran Biennale, Iran (1966), the Silver Jubilee Award of the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts (1973), Gold medal for contribution in book design, National Book Center, Dhaka (1975), Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award in the 3rd National Art Exhibition (1977), Ekushey Padak (1986), 6th Bangabandhu Award (1994) and the Sultan Smrity Gold Medal (2001). Qayyums paintings have been exhibited all over the world. He is a noted illustrator and graphics designer and is a 10-time winner of the National Book Center Prize for Best Book Cover Design. He taught at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, for 37 years and retired in 1997. The artist is a freelance painter and graphics designer. Tahera Khanam Born in 1936, in Barisal, Bangladesh. Tahera graduated from the Govt. Institute of Arts in 1959. Her first solo exhibition was held in Gallery Chitrak, Dhaka, in 2003. She has participated in may group exhibitions including the exhibition on the occasion of 50 Years of Bangladesh Art organized by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Tahera is a freelance painter. Rafiqun Nabi Gifted with an eye for details, Nabi is known not only for his paintings, engravings and drawings, but also for scathing and witty cartoons. One of his most memorable cartoon characters Tokai is a street urchin whose disarmingly simple questions prove extremely unsettling. His cartoons have adorned front pages of leading daily newspapers and magazines and proved highly popular for their social satire. One of the foremost painters of the present time, Nabis distinctive handling of bright colours and sharp line-drawings place him in a class apart. Better known as Ranabi (b. 1943, Chapainawabganj), he graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Dhaka in 1964 and went on to study printmaking in the Athens School of Fine Arts under a Greek government post-graduate scholarship (1973-76). His awards include the Promoters Prize, Inter Graphic-80, Berlin (1980), Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award in the 9th National Art Exhibition (1989), the Ekushey Padak (1993), Agrani Bank Award for Childrens Book Design and for Best Juvenile Novel Charidike Juddha (1995) and S M Sultan Padak (2002). Nabi is 13 times recipient of the National Book Centre prize for Childrens Book Cover Design (1968 to 90). He was the first Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. Nabi is a freelance artist residing in Dhaka. Monirul Islam b. 1943, Jamalpur, Bangladesh. Education: BFA, Institute of Fine Arts (presently Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka), 1967. Farida Zaman Farida Zamans calm and composure, both in her personal life and work, is transmitted through a special sensitivity into the compositions and characterizations of her art. She has long dwelled on the simple, uncomplicated imageries of rural life and environment. Her preference for the pastoral is best exemplified by the recurrent themes of fishing nets, cats, the moon and the frail figure of a girl. Farida (b. 1953, Chandpur) graduated from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts in Dhaka in 1974. She did her masters from the MS University in Baroda in 1978 and went on to receive a doctoral degree from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, in 1995. She received the Young Artists Award (Gold Medal) at the 4th Young Artists Art Exhibition (1979), the Commendation Award at the 5th India Triennial (1982), the Australian governments Cultural Award (1985), National Book Center Award for Childrens Book Illustration (1986), the International Life Membership Award of the Salon de Tokyo, Japan (1986) and the Bangladesh Mahila Parisad Award (2009). Farida is the Chairman of the Department of Drawing and Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. Ranjit Das Ranjit (b. 1956, Tangail) won acclaim when he received the grand award at the Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh in 1995. His other prizes include the Best Award (Painting) in the 8th Young Artists Art Exhibition (1988), Honourable Mention Awards in the 9th National Art Exhibition, Dhaka (1990) and in the 5th Asian Art Biennale (1991) and the 2nd Award, 18th International Miniature Show, Florida, USA (1993). Ranjits compositions derive overall strength from the strategic juxtaposition of tension and balance represented by lines, however minimal or suggestive, with a guarded optimism shining through. Ranjit graduated from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts in 1975 and did an MFA from the M S University of Baroda, India, in 1981. His mentor the noted painter Prof K G Subramanyan had a profound influence on his later development as an artist. Ranjit teaches at the Teachers Training College in Dhaka. Rokeya Sultana The simplicity in Rokeyas formal arrangement, which sometimes exploits the elements of naïve art, the juxtaposition of paint areas, the dynamic and flowing line and her delicate attention to details combine to give her work a certain focus. After graduating from the Bangladesh College of Arts and Crafts in 1980 Rokeya (b. 1958, Chittagong) received a master degree in printmaking from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, in 1983. Notable among her awards are the Purchase Award, Somerstown Gallery, 4th Biennial, NY, USA (1992), Grand Prize in the 3rd Bharat Bhavan Print Biennale (1995), Bengal Foundation Award in the14th National Art Exhibition (1999), Honourable Mention in the 9th Asian Art Biennale (1999), Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad Biennale Award (2000), Ananya Shirsha Dash Award (2001), and the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award in the 15th National Art Exhibition (2002). She availed a French Govt Scholarship at LAtelier Le Couriere et Frelaut in 2003. Rokeya is a member of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka. A 29 min documentary was produced on artist Rokeya Sultana titled Sudurer Pathik (directed by Fahmida Munni) by Bengal Foundation in 2004. Kanak Chanpa Chakma Kanaks paintings record her links with age-old customs and traditions of ethnic communities by passionately reflecting their buoyant spirit. A great believer in the ideology of tolerance and abstinence, much of her work focuses on the Buddhas quest for truth and enlightenment. Kanak (b. 1963, Rangamati Hill Tracts) received a master degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, in 1986. She received a Fellowship at the Penn State University in 1993 – 94. Notable among her awards are the 2nd Prize in Modern Painting, International Miniature Art Contest, Florida, USA (1992), Ananya Shirsha Dash Award (1994), Best Woman Artist of the 21st Century Award, Latin American Museum, USA (2001), the Bashundhara Group Award in the 15th National Art Exhibition organised by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (2002), Diploma Award at the Tashkent Biennale in Uzbekistan (2003) and the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Memorial Award (2003). She is a freelance painter living and working in Dhaka. Mohammad Iqbal b. 1967, Chuadanga, Bangladesh.
