Parties protest Polavaram project The Samajwadi Party on Saturday asked chief minister Naveen Patnaik to take an all-party delegation to the President to oppose the Polavaram project in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The project is against the federal spirit of the country as Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana are opposed to it, said SP state president Rabi Behera. Behera said though cases had been filed in the Supreme Court, the NDA government passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill in Lok Sabha on Friday without waiting for its verdict. Unless the height of the proposed Polavaram dam is reduced, a large number of people would become homeless in Malkangiri district, he added. Time has come for politicians of different parties to come together and protest such an anti-Odisha project, he said. SP workers demonstrated holding the NDA government responsible for passing a Bill in Lok Sabha paving the way for construction of the project. Senior Congress leader Niranjan Patnaik flayed the Centres for unilaterally passing the bill without taking Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Telengana into confidence. Odishas interests are not being safeguarded because of the weak state leadership, he alleged.
