Party members tell Polye to step down March 28,2014, 01:13 am-Post Courier By Alexander Rheeney DISGRUNTLED members of THE Party have given an ultimatum to Don Polye to step down as parliamentary leader or face an exodus of MPs and the disintegration of the party he set up. The MPs wrote a letter to the Kandep MP and former cabinet minister and delivered it to him yesterday, quietly hoping he will agree to step aside and open the way for his deputy party leader and Deputy Prime Minister Leo Dion to take over. General consensus is Don has to step down as a party leader, he has done enough damage to the Government already. This Government is THE Party’s Government, that’s the general consensus so based on that understanding the Alotau Accord needs to be strengthened. So what we are saying is Don you have done enough damage to our Government already, a THE Party MP and cabinet minister told the Post-Courier on the condition of anonymity. Mr Polye, in a separate interview with this newspaper, denied there was a revolt within his party and claimed they were intact. But the MP, in response, said there was a lot at stake for first-term politicians such as himself as being in the Opposition benches had its challenges including the delay or lack of access to electoral grants for their electorates. Most of us are first time MPs in THE Party and we realise the importance of staying with the Government so that our electorates get the benefits of government funding and everything that goes with it. I mean you know the strife the Opposition is going through at the moment. We do not want to be sitting in the Opposition. Don wants us all to go down with him, he wants us to join him and go down but you know we are not going to resign from our ministries because some of us this is the first time we’ve ever had a ministry. The MPs have given Mr Polye until tomorrow to make up his mind and will meet with him to get his response. While the DPM is the preferred replacement for the Kandep MP, the MP said the leadership mantle could go to another politician if the East New Britain Regional MP refused to take up the position.
