Pastor Mikes Daily Devotion Friday March 14, 2014 Luke 1:46–47, And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. The angel Gabriel has just finished telling two different people things that seemed too good to be true. We see two completely different reactions to these wonderful things. For the first person, Zacharias, who is John the Baptists father, the things he heard were too good to be true, and therefore too good to believe. In Gods economy, if you do not believe, then you really have nothing to say. Zacharias was rendered mute. For the other person, Mary the mother of the Lord, the news was just as miraculous, but she believed. She exhibited faith in Gods word given by Gabriel and she believed. Because she believed, she had plenty to say, and what we see in verses 46-55 is called Marys Magnificat. There are six facets to this magnificat or prayer/song. First, Mary praises God from the totality of who she is. In verses 46-47 we see her praising Him body, soul, and spirit. Secondly, she keeps a proper perspective of who she is. Religion has made Mary into someone she is not, but she recognizes that God is her savior because she is a sinner (Verses 47b-48). Thirdly, she recognizes the nature of God. In verses 49-50, she notes that God is mighty, personal, holy, merciful, and eternal. Fourthly, she knows that He is God Almighty, verses 51-52. Fifthly, that her God is providing for her, verse 53. Lastly, He is the God who is going to fulfill His promise of a savior. We know so little about Mary, but even in this prayer I see that she is a woman of the word. So looking at Mary in a proper biblical light, see the example that she sets for us. She heard a simple message from a messenger of God, then Gods word conceived within her and she believed. At this time Christ was in her and was about to be revealed through her. Her spirit rejoiced and her soul magnified God and all He does. We would do well in following this example of Mary. Psalm 34:2–3, My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; The humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, And let us exalt His name together.
